Erysipelas is a skin infection caused, in most cases, by the bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes group A, and it can also be caused by other streptococcus or by staphylococcus. Infectious process that can reach the fat in the subcutaneous tissue that spreads through the lymphatic vessels. It is almost always acquired by chilblains, but it is also caused by any injury. People of any age can be affected, however it is more common in diabetics and obese people.
During the incubation period, which is one to eight days, symptoms are malaise, discouragement, headache, nausea and vomiting accompanied by high fever and appearance of red spots, small or large blisters on the legs, face, trunk or arms. At first, the skin appears smooth, shiny, red and warm. The swelling increases and blisters develop as the infection develops.
Laboratory tests are only used to monitor the patient's evolution, as the diagnosis is made by clinical examination through the analysis of signs and symptoms presented by the patient.
