O Trichuris Trichiura it's the roundworm causing trichocephaliasis. this disease does not have intermediate hosts, if it happens by egg ingestion of this animal, which are generally found in the soil, water and food, come from contaminated feces.
In the intestine, the eggs develop and, in approximately 90 days, the worms, already adults, mate and give rise to new parasites, daily. These are mainly concentrated in the cecum, colon and rectum.
In most cases, the presence of these worms is asymptomatic. However, when the amount of these is excessive, allergic reactions, rectal bleeding, diarrhea, weight loss, insomnia, irritability, anemia, tissue damage in the region, among others symptoms, can occur. Depending on the parasite load, these symptoms can be milder or more severe.
O diagnosis clinical examination is performed via stool examinations, using the Lutz (Hoffman), Faust or Kato-Katz methods. O treatment involves the use of allopathic drugs such as albendazole. To thefollow-up, it is necessary to do these exams again 7, 14 and 21 days after the end of the medication use.
Trichocephaliasis occurs more frequently in tropical regions, in places where sanitary conditions are regular or poor. These parasites can infect pigs and monkeys.
Hygiene measures, such as washing fruits and vegetables before eating, washing hands after going to the bathroom, are the main ways to avoid the presence of these parasites. Basic sanitation and treatment of patients are measures that, in the long term, can drastically reduce the number of cases.
