Oageism is a term that refers to prejudice, stereotyping and discrimination based on a person's age, especially when it comes to discrimination against older people.
Like other forms of prejudice, ageism can result in social exclusion, limited opportunities and unfair treatment in work, education, health and other areas of life. Like all kinds of prejudice, ageism imposes invisible barriers and limits to be contemplated.

The Maturi agency, together with Ernst & Young, carried out a study in 2022 with almost 200 Brazilian companies, revealing the strong presence of ageism in the labor market.
The study pointed out that only 6% to 10% of employees in the companies surveyed are over 50 years old. Consistent with this finding, 78% of companies recognize their age trend, stating that they do not have a contingent of older workers.
The Brazilian labor market faces age barriers
According to research by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the National Research by Household Sample (Pnad), from 2012 to 2019, the population aged over 50 rose from 23% to 28%.
Following the estimate, by 2040, most Brazilian workers will be over 45 years old. Still according to the IBGE, 17 million families receive support from people aged over 60 years.
According to Litvak, founder of the Maturi agency, entering the job market can be difficult due to a phenomenon called autoagerism, in which people are prejudiced against their own age and believe that learning something new is something reserved for the youngest young people.
