Historical journalist and Brazilian businessman born in Umbuzeiro, Paraíba, who became the owner of a journalistic empire, Os Diários Associados (1940-1980) established at base of political interests and commitments, and which was notable for the enormous influence it exerted, for several decades, with the highest decision-making spheres in Brazil (1940-1970). Graduated from the Recife Faculty of Law (1913), he began working in the press as a student. He moved (1917) to Rio de Janeiro, starting to collaborate with Correio da Manhã. He was editor-in-chief of Jornal do Brasil (1919-1921) and lawyer for Companhia Light and Power.
He bought (1924) O Jornal, later the main organ of the Diários Associados, a powerful communications company built on the basis of political interests and commitments, which published 34 newspapers in the country, in addition to having 36 radio stations, 18 television stations, one news agency, several children's magazines and Editora O Cruzeiro, with the weekly magazine of the same name, the largest circulation periodical in the Latin America. He was a Senator for Maranhão (1952-1957), but he resigned his mandate when he was appointed ambassador to London (1957-1960), during the Kubitschek government. Founder of the São Paulo Museum of Art, Masp, he wrote several books and became an immortal at the Academia Brasileira de Letras, where he occupied chair number 37, and died in São Paulo.
