Given the critical importance of the billion-dollar microchip industry and plays a fundamental in the advancement of promising areas, such as artificial intelligence, more regions are seeking to get involved in the sector.
Russia is being bold
Russia, in particular, is taking bold steps to strengthen its presence in the semiconductor industry. In addition to its stated intention to acquire advanced US equipment through alternative channels, the Russian government plans to invest $38 billion in developing its chip industry.
In this sense, the country is considerably behind other technological powers. Russia's goal is to produce 14nm chips by 2030, an ambitious feat considering that, currently, experts estimate that the country is capable of producing 130nm chips.
Consequently, this places Russia well behind countries like Taiwan and South Korea, which already produce 3nm chips and are exploring 2nm semiconductor manufacturing.
To achieve this goal, Russia plans to develop 28nm chips by 2027 and, by 2030, advance to 14nm chips. In some ways, this may seem challenging, especially considering the need to develop your own extreme ultraviolet lithography technology.
However, the technology industry is known for its ability to change quickly and unexpectedly. Finally, the Russians intend to invest US$38 billion in the development of lithography, staff training and marketing, in the hope of achieving this ambitious goal in next decade.
