The practicality of the microwave is undeniable, but you need to be careful when choosing the food that will be heated in this household appliance so present in Brazilian homes. So, despite the desire to speed up the preparation process, there are some foods that should absolutely not be placed in the microwave, experts warn.

Foods to avoid in the microwave:

1. Rice

Rice, a fundamental element in the Brazilian diet, surprisingly should not be heated in the microwave. Extreme heat strips essential nutrients from the grain, compromising its nutritional value. Therefore, the healthiest option is traditional cooking in boiling water, preserving vitamins, minerals and fiber.

Despite the temptation to prepare meat quickly in the microwave, experts warn against this practice. This is because the meat must be completely defrosted to avoid problems such as drying out and loss of protein value due to high temperatures.

3. Popcorn

The grains used in this type of popcorn contain perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a substance that can interfere with the endocrine system, affecting the production of sex hormones. So, the safest and healthiest option is still to prepare it in the pan.

4. Milk

Meanwhile, milk, rich in calcium and essential for healthy bones and teeth, loses around 40% of its nutrients when heated in the microwave. Furthermore, vitamin B12 is completely eliminated. Therefore, avoid heating milk in this appliance, even for that evening cup of hot chocolate.

Surprisingly, cooking eggs with shells in the microwave is an extremely risky practice, as they can explode. Even hard-boiled eggs must be cut before heating to avoid accidents such as burns and serious eye injuries.

6. Water

Finally, heating water in the microwave may seem harmless, but it is a practice that can result in serious accidents. Due to high temperatures, water can overheat beyond the boiling point without forming bubbles like on the stove, making it difficult to tell that it is extremely hot.
