Reduction of the age of criminal responsibility is suggested by Bolsonaro, in case of re-election

A criminal majority in Brazil has always followed the guidelines of the Convention adopted by the UN (United Nations). However, if re-elected, President Jair Bolsonaro has committed to submitting a proposal to the National Congress to reduce the current age of majority, which is 18 years. So far, the Chief Executive has not provided information about this government project.

How is the age of criminal responsibility in Brazil today?

In Brazil, the age of criminal responsibility begins at 18 years of age, as provided for in article 228 of the Constitution. 1988, which establishes that minors cannot be held accountable or subject to the rule Special.

The decision to set the age limit at 18 has to do with the doctrine of full protection developed by the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, which the United Nations adopted in 1989. Bolsonaro, however, wants to do things differently.

The statement was given when leaving the Alvorada Palace, in an interview, on September 9.

Bolsonaro believes that, after the elections, having formed a large bench in the National Congress, there will be a balance of forces. In addition, he claims that he will talk to the president of the STF, Rosa Weber, as he does not want to confront anyone, nor present a proposal that will upset some Power.

Bolsonaro supporters for a re-election

Bolsonaro continues to expand his reinforcements for the re-election campaign. The mayors of Manaus (AM), David Almeida, and Sorocaba (SP), Rodrigo Maganhato, are among the politicians who have already announced their support.

The current president believes that these are the mayors who have the greatest visibility and are doing well in the evaluations with the population. Bolsonaro added by saying that “they received a lot of resources from the federal government, they are in the black and their popularity is quite high”.
