Japanese company imposes time restriction and reaps benefits

There was a 57% increase in the opening of new businesses in the chocolate and related category in 2021 compared to 2019, according to Sebrae. The data are from the National Classification of Economic Activity (CNAE), which is administered by entrepreneurs.

Regarding revenue, the survey showed that 42% of entrepreneurs had higher sales in 2020 (the first year of the pandemic) than in 2019. The data also show that, for the third consecutive year, the sector opened more companies than it closed.

Therefore, in 2021 alone, there were 2,397 openings and 883 business closings. Most of them (with a total of 2,319) were opened by individual microentrepreneurs (MEIs). The remaining numbers refer to micro companies (72) and small companies (6).

Many MEIs invest in chocolate businesses

According to Sebrae, the chocolate industry attracts micro-entrepreneurs because it is a field that does not require professional training to carry out activities. Furthermore, no complicated machines are needed and the raw materials are more affordable. Thus, it is a sector characterized by the ease of entrepreneurship, either by necessity or opportunity.

In this way, it is possible to perceive a group of entrepreneurs who usually make eggs and chocolates at home from ready-made chocolate bars, without many machines and equipment. Also included are occasional bakers looking for extra income at certain times of the year, such as Easter.

Easter with more expensive eggs in 2022

According to a study carried out by the Paulista Association of Supermarkets (Apas), the price of Easter eggs sold in supermarkets increased by up to 40% compared to the previous year. As a result, smaller items such as 250 gram eggs, chocolates and pralines received more attention from consumers.

Despite the increase in egg prices, Apas believes that other products consumed on that day, such as fish, assorted chocolate, wine, fish and bonbons, should suffer a more subtle increase or, in some cases, even a reduction.
