Focus on the environment: Coca-Cola sets a sustainable goal by 2030

It is no secret that many multinationals have a large contribution to the pollution of the oceans and deforestation of the forests and with Coca-Cola it is not different. A Coke, as one of the world's largest plastics producers, announced a new global target in February. By 2030, the company stated that 25% of all its products would be sold in recyclable packaging and refill mode.

Coca Cola's 100% Sustainable Packaging Goal

The brand hopes to have 100% recyclable packaging by 2025 and use 50% recycled materials in the manufacture of its packaging by 2030. In addition, the company aims to recycle and receive a bottle or can for each item sold, regardless of its origin.

If this commitment, which is part of the “World without waste” plan, is maintained, the giant will be able to avoid pollution of the world's oceans for billions of non-recyclable plastic bottles, as well as reducing the carbon footprint of the company.

The new goal also depends on its partners

Unfortunately, Coca-Cola still depends on a necessary component to fulfill its promise: that there is also the parallel commitment of the company's main bottlers to increase its refill sales to higher levels tall.

The beverage industry refers to single-use plastic bottles as “one-way” since they are intended to be used only once and then discarded. Thus, the modality of refill bottles are designed to be reused.

Consumers pay a price for the containers and return them to the store or collection point, where they are retrieved, cleaned, refilled and refunded by the company. Before the introduction of one-way, all beverages were sold in refillable bottles.

The impact that can be generated

A recent analysis by Oceana found significant potential to reduce plastic in the oceans and increase market share of returnables. It has been determined that increasing countries' use of returnable bottles by 10% instead of single-use PET bottles can reduce plastic bottle pollution by 22%.

Almost half of the company's packaging is made up of single-use PET bottles, producing 3 million tons of plastic packaging per year, or the equivalent of 200,000 bottles per minute.

Comparing returnables with single-use plastic, there are significant opportunities for cost savings because returnables do not have to be remanufactured each time they are used.
