Parkinson's is a neurodegenerative disease that affects a person's movements. It causes tremors, slowness, muscle stiffness, imbalance and alters speech and writing. In this sense, some young people in the United States have developed an artificial intelligence that can detect this disease by analyzing the patient's handwriting.

The proposal of the brothers Tanish Tyagi and Riya Tyagi, 16 and 14 years old, was to create an accessible model that could make the early detection of Parkinson's disease. After much research, the work had the guidance of researchers at Penn State University and the laboratories of Massachusetts General Hospital.
The data used for the elaboration of this artificial intelligence includes open source images of drawing exams of 53 healthy people and 105 Parkinson's patients. With that, the youngsters extracted several characteristics from the images that allowed them to analyze the tremors through writing.
Finally, the young people are currently working on image processing, updating the model and returning results to give users a better understanding of the diagnosis. In addition, the initial idea is to improve the accuracy of the model, developing it further. The goal is for people to be able to fill out a handwriting assessment form and submit it for detection.
Parkinson's disease
The World Health Organization (WHO) states that about 1% of the world's population aged 65 and over suffers from this neurodegenerative disease. In Brazil, it is estimated that about 200,000 people have Parkinson's. In addition, the Ministry of Health states that this is the second most frequent progressive neurodegenerative disease in the world, second only to Alzheimer's.
Parkinson's disease is caused by the sudden death of neurons that produce dopamine in a very specific location, called the Black Substance, which is in the brain. Finally, in recent research, USP students discovered a new substance that may prevent the development of Parkinson's in the future.
