Fiocruz comments on the current pandemic scenario

As claimed by Nísia Trindade, president of Fiocruz, we live in a society that believes it is very easy to respond quickly to health threats, however, this does not it is just a mistake, because, in order to be able to quickly combat any threat to public health, constant investment in science, technology and innovation is needed.

Nísia also highlighted that this investment must be associated with public health and protection and claimed that it was necessary to decentralize the vaccine producing centers and join the other countries.

Pandemic

Evidently, the COVID-19 pandemic must serve as an example for society, even if we have currently achieved a significant reduction in the number of deaths and cases when compared to the data previous.

For the researcher from Fiocruz's National School of Public Health (Ensp/Fiocruz), Carlos Machado, it is necessary to analyze the marks left in the Brazilian population, which, although representing less than 3% of the world's population, accounted for more than 10% of the victims of the pandemic throughout the world.

“At the present time, in several countries and in Brazil, we are experiencing a very positive scenario. In Brazil, the existence of the SUS [Unified Health System] made it possible not only to reduce the impact of the pandemic on the population, but also to advance in vaccination, ”he commented. In addition, in his view, the SUS will require much more investment to be able to overcome the traces left by the virus.

The coordinator of the Foundation's Scientific Computing Program (Procc/Fiocruz), Daniel Villela, also shared his vision of the current scenario. According to him, it is invalid to expect that an absence of circulation of SARS-CoV-2 will happen, because the transmission of its variants and considerable chances of suffering mutations, however, Villela believes that an endemic regime will occur, where the disease will act predictably.

“What should be avoided is the climate that the pandemic has just had a scenario of neglected disease status. There is still plenty of room to move forward. Children were less affected at first, but they are affected and need attention.”
