RJ teachers' strike still continues; decision disregards Court of Justice

Teachers of the state education network in Rio de Janeiro are still on strike, despite the decision of the Court of justice of State. In this way, the end of the strike seems to be far away, since it started more than a month ago, on May 17th.

According to the judge and president of the TJRJ, Ricardo Rodrigues Cardozo, the stoppage decision is illegal and that negotiations must continue with teachers working. However, after the category met, the decision was to keep the strike going.

After that, the category scheduled for tomorrow a "strike strike" in state schools, to inform what is the intention and where the movement will unfold.

Understand the manifestation of teachers

The State Union of Education Professionals (Sepe) is paralyzing activities and claiming for some basic rights of the category. According to information from Sepe, what is required is that the application of the national salary floor for teachers has already been decided.

In addition, teachers have asked that the career plan established by federal laws be fulfilled. Finally, there is also a request for all absences due to strikes to be paid, starting in 2016.

However, Cardozo considers these irregular manifestations and that the category's activities are essential for maintaining order and for the development of citizens. For this reason, he decided to impose a fine of BRL 500,000 on Sepe, in addition to another BRL 5,000 for its directors, in case of non-compliance.

Despite the decision, strikes continue

Although more meetings are planned to debate the claims, none of the last ones saw any kind of agreement between the State and the category.

For this reason, after a meeting on the São Clemente court, the teachers decided that they would continue with the strike, regardless of the court decision. The next meeting will take place next Wednesday (28), as determined by the TJRJ, with representatives from Sepe and the state government.

Finally, according to the Secretary of State for Education, Roberta Barreto, there needs to be a reconciliation, since the practice and appreciation of the profession are essential, but students cannot be harmed by the claims.
