McDonald's has announced a global restructuring that will affect many corporate employees around the world, with the company temporarily closing all of its US offices.
CEO Chris Kempczinski warned of job cuts in January, saying the company had become "unfocused". The email also hinted that the restructuring could see menus simplified, with Kempczinski warning that there was a lot of duplication around the world, with 70 different versions of a crispy chicken sandwich, per example.

Classics like McFlurries and Big Macs are familiar to McDonald's fans the world over, but the company offers many local variations on popular options.
Chicken sandwich variations include the UAE's McArabia Chicken and the UK's Mayo Chicken. Meanwhile, India has a Veg Surprise Burger, and in Spain, the McCrispy Honey Mustard comes with crispy chicken, gouda cheese and Batavia lettuce, topped with a mustard and honey sauce.
While emails warning of the layoffs were mainly sent to US employees, the impact on the Brazil team is not yet known.
The Chicago-based chain told employees threatened with layoffs last week, and employees were told to work from home, with layoffs taking place virtually. Company executives also advised canceling upcoming face-to-face meetings with suppliers and other external parties at headquarters.
Workers who do not have access to a computer were instructed to provide their information personal contacts to the manager to ensure comfort and confidentiality during the notification.
In 2018, McDonald's had already cut management-level workers to be "more dynamic, agile and competitive". Despite the cost of living crisis, the company managed to maintain profits, with customers turning to the chain for fast, cheap fast food.
However, CEO Chris Kempczinski cautioned that less affluent customers typically order less or less expensive items.
McDonald's employs approximately 200,000 people worldwide, with approximately 75% of employees located outside the US.
