Less populous countries in the world

The world population contingent is constantly growing, but this process develops at different scales, since in Latin America, Africa and especially in Asia the population growth is well above the others continents.

According to data released in 2009 by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), planet Earth has 6.829 billion inhabitants. These people are unequally distributed across the planet, with some nation-states having fewer inhabitants than many Brazilian cities. The Vatican, for example, is inhabited by only 990 people.

Both Oceania and Central America have 9 of the 30 countries with the smallest population in the world. Europe, in turn, is represented on the list by 8 nations. According to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the 30 least populous countries are:

1st Vatican (Europe): 990 inhabitants.

2nd Nauru (Oceania): 9,771 inhabitants.

3rd Tuvalu (Oceania): 11,093 inhabitants.

4th Palau (Oceania): 20,397 inhabitants.
