The case took place on December 18, 2022, when SickKids identified that corporate and internal systems had been invaded by hackers. The phone lines and the website were down for some time after the criminal attack.
Due to the invasion, the images and exams that were in the laboratory were delayed. Child patients had to wait for the system to be normalized. Ten days passed and only 50% of the main systems were recovered, as reported by the hospital.
After a huge backlash from the case and the hospital's statement, the Lockbit hacker group issued an apology:
“We formally apologize for the attack on sikkids.ca and return the decoder free of charge, the partner who attacked this hospital violated our rules, is blocked and is no longer in our program affiliates.”
To mitigate the damage they caused, hackers released a decryptor so that anyone could access the files that were collected during the attack.
