SWOT Satellite: Climate Change and the Global Water Cycle

O satellite The $1.2 billion Surface Walter and Ocean Topography (SWOT), launched by NASA, aims to give scientists a new window into climate change and the global water cycle.

Therefore, let's talk about some of the data that the SWOT satellite will provide science, thus contributing to the advancement of river hydrology and also to the changes world climate.

SWOT Satellite: A New Lens on a Warming World

The SWOT satellite was launched on December 16 of this year from Vandenberg Space Force Base, located in California. This mission was led by NASA and the French National Center for Space Studies, with the objective of taking the radar of the bodies of water, allowing scientists to measure and track the elevation, extent and movement of water across the planet Earth.

Currently, there are between 10,000 and 20,000 publicly available scientific data from the 6 million known lakes and reservoirs. SWOT will be able to measure almost all of them and it will be every 10 or 11 days.

The data that will be provided by NASA's newest satellite are of paramount importance to scientists, so this is a project of great magnitude. Therefore, the SWOT promises to generate several advances in river hydrology and, consequently, in climate change.

In addition, SWOT will be able to provide high-resolution measurements, allowing scientists to track currents, eddies and the ebb and flow of tides. To contribute to the advances promoted by the satellite, an international consortium – involving countries such as the United States (USA), Australia, France and others – came about with the aim of promoting field expeditions in 18 ocean locations around the world, thus helping to calibrate SWOT data.
