Enel Ceará and PicPay promote allegedly misleading advertising

A Enel Energy Distribution of Ceará offered its consumers an apparently advantageous opportunity to pay their electricity bill through the PicPay and receive R$12.00 from cashback.

The promotion required the payment of two invoices for June and July of this year. However, the procon de Fortaleza demanded clarification on Enel's announcement, accusing the "promotion" of being misleading and does not present any real benefit to customers. The Municipal Department for the Protection and Defense of Consumer Rights explains that the payment of invoice using the credit card by PicPay entails charges of interest rates and convenience of 3,99%.

This supposedly misleading advertising induces consumers to believe they are saving money when, in fact, in some cases the values of some electricity bills could have an increase of more than 100.00 real. In an example explained by Procon, an energy bill worth 420.00 reais would increase to 436.75, if paid in installments. Thus surpassing the promised cashback. If the same example is divided into more installments, the initial value increases by more than 100.00 reais.

“The migration to this type of payment seems to us to be more costly for the consumer and this was not clear in the partnership disclosed by the Concessionaire. On the contrary, such a condition was announced as something beneficial and that it would facilitate the payment of bills. O Consumer Protection Code values clear, precise and conspicuous information”, clarified the director of Procon Fortaleza, Eneylândia Rabelo.
