In this selection, Brazil occupies 21 positions, and all listed universities are public. It is important to point out that the work of the consultancy defines the exact position of the first 100 placements, while the others are grouped by tens or hundreds, not determining their specific order. For this reason, institutions in Brazil are in positions between 100 and 150 or 701 to 800.
Among the top 15 universities in the world are specific US and UK institutions. The survey has been carried out annually since 2003, using the number of students and professors who have won Nobel Prizes and Field Medals as evaluation criteria, in addition to researchers with reference works in their own area published in a short period, as well as other categories that present the performance of their members.
The ranking also considers the performance of universities across different areas of knowledge, separating by different categories, the main ones being: natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social. Of the 54 areas analyzed, Brazilian colleges occupy the top 50 in six categories.
With regard to Latin America, the country with the highest number of institutions classified in the survey is Brazil, followed by from Chile and Mexico, each with four universities in the ranking, in addition to Argentina and Colombia, with two institutions each. Other nations in the region did not occupy a position among the top thousand. With this evaluation, it is possible to verify the relevance of Brazilian teaching in its universities and in the qualification of its professionals.
