Chrome update announcement sparks controversy
The company is about to release Manifest V3 to all Google Chrome users. It announced the release dates of the platform update for browser extensions, however this new update will restrict the functioning of ad blockers. The somewhat controversial change is expected to come to everyone in 2023.
Discussions about it have been going on since 2019, when the document first became public. At that time, many people were already against the successor of the current Manifest V2 because of the change in policy through extensions to block ads from websites in general.
In 2020, Google released Chrome 88 which already showed the first traces of how Manifest V3 would work. Once again, concern returned through the justification of ensuring more privacy and security for users. However again there was talk about restricting rules that extensions would apply on web pages.
Even so, insertion began to come to life this year.
Manifest V3 will limit blockers soon
In February 2022, the Chrome Web Store embraced the change by not accepting extensions in the Manifest V2 standard. Google Product Manager David Li shared the next steps for Manifest V3.
See the repository schedule below:
- January 2023: Manifest V3 becomes a prerequisite for earning the “Featured” badge;
- June 2023: The store no longer lists extensions coming from Manifest V2;
- January 2024: Google will remove all extensions over Manifest V2 from the store.
The company commented on the browser steps.
“Starting in January Chrome 112, Chrome may conduct experiments to disable support for Manifest V2 extensions in the Canary, Dev and Beta channels,” they said. “Starting in June Chrome 115, Chrome may experiment to disable support for Manifest V2 extensions on all channels, including stable.” For those who are developers, the tip is unique: it is better to prepare for these new changes.
Users are worried about what to expect from Manifest V3
Google is excited to highlight the differentiators of Manifest V3. In the publication of the last Wednesday of the month of September, 28, Li says that the new standard offers users greater security when installing extensions, where there is transparency and improved control of permissions.
Everyone values data security, but the problem is the update will restrict certain types of extensions that people need: ad blockers. This has been a nuisance since 2019.
