Ordinance allocates more than R$ 100 million for breast reconstructions

Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure that aims to restore the shape and size of the breast after a mastectomy (total or partial removal of the breast). There are different techniques for reconstruction, so choosing the best option depends on several factors, including the type of mastectomy, the patient's general health, and personal preference.

The good news is that an Ordinance from the Ministry of Health published last Tuesday, 14th, in the Official Gazette of the Union, establishes a exceptional strategy for expanding access to breast reconstruction for women with breast cancer within the Unified Health System (SUS).

In total, more than R$ 100 million will be allocated to the states and the Federal District.

Will be considered suitable candidates, women diagnosed with breast cancer submitted to previous total mastectomy (radical or simple) and those with indication for breast reconstruction in the same act surgical. According to data from the folder, more than 20,000 people are waiting in line for the procedure performed on the public network.

It is important to remember that breast reconstruction is not mandatory for all women who undergo a mastectomy. The decision to perform the procedure is personal and should be discussed with the medical team. Also according to the ordinance, the duration of the strategy to expand the surgeries will be 24 months.

Thus, it will be up to the ministry, through the Secretariat for Specialized Health Care:

  • Accompany and monitor the national execution;
  • Establish the requirements and form of membership of the federative entities;
  • Track and monitor the results obtained.

Most common techniques for breast reconstruction

  • breast implantss: are used to create a new breast after a full or partial mastectomy. Implants can be filled with saline or silicone.
  • Reconstruction with fabric scraps: It is a procedure that uses the patient's own tissue, taken from another part of the body, such as the abdomen, back or buttocks, to reconstruct the breast.
  • Reconstruction combined with implants and tissue flaps: In some cases, it may be necessary to combine the implant technique with tissue flap reconstruction to create a more natural breast.
