“You may have to escape through a cabin fire or there may be a separate fire on the ground as soon as you exit the aircraft. Everyone is wearing yoga pants on planes now, but I avoid all artificial fibers because they're more likely to burn and stick to you if there's a fire. I advise wearing cotton clothing or anything made from natural fibers,” said Christine.
She added by saying that the best thing people can do is put their shoes on for takeoff and landing, which is not yet required by many airlines.
“If you escape from an aircraft, the ground could be very hot or cold, it could be covered in oil or on fire, or in a cornfield – you don't want to be barefoot. Mainly err on the side of caution. Choose sneakers over high heels, choose natural fibers over synthetics, and wear tight clothing over baggy,” she adds.
Andrea Fischbach, a flight attendant, recommends leaving all restrictive clothing in your suitcase when flying. According to her, anything that gets too heavy on the skin can cause cramping, swelling, and pain later on.
“It's really important to be able to move a little bit in your seat – very difficult, I know – and keep your blood flowing. If you are tall, travel a lot, or are on a long flight, this is extremely important because you are at risk of developing DVT. Bloating is a major issue, even for flight attendants, so wear something comfortable around your waist, like an elastic band.”
