According to 2022 Census, Manaus (AM) was the capital that recorded the highest percentage of population growth. In 2010, the last time the Census was carried out, the city showed around 1.8 million people. Now, there are more than 2.63 million.
The growth is equivalent to about 14.5% in recent years. In addition, the city became the first with the highest absolute number of growth: 261,533 new residents.

It is worth mentioning that the Census should have taken place in 2020, but was postponed due to the covid-19 pandemic.
Additionally, the 2022 Census pointed to a growth of more than 12.3 million people across the country in the last 12 years. Currently, the Brazilian population is around 203 million.
2022 Census updates the ranking of the most populous cities in the country
In the published ranking, the three most populous cities in the country are: São Paulo (SP), with 11 million inhabitants, followed by Rio de Janeiro (RJ), with 6 million, and Brasília (DF), with 2.8 million. Among them, only Rio de Janeiro showed a decrease in growth.
Of the rest of the top 20 most populous cities, we have only three cities that are not capitals of the country: Campinas (SP) in 14th, Guarulhos (SP) in 13th and São Gonçalo (RJ) in 18th.
Furthermore, the capitals of Midwest Brazil showed significant increases in their populations. Cuiabá (MT), which is not in the top 20, had an increase of +18% in growth.
How did the other regions of the country perform?
In addition to the Midwest, with uniform growth, the other regions had slightly different data: The Southeast had two of its capitals with a reduction in their population, as in Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizon.
The Northeast, on the other hand, had very different numbers. From a 1% reduction in Fortaleza (CE) to a 15.3% increase in João Pessoa (PB).
The North also felt this difference: while Manaus reached 14.5% growth, Belém (PA) recorded a significant drop of 6.5%.
The South, on the other hand, maintained more or less the same numbers, showing a slight increase of 1.2% in Curitiba (PR) and a decrease of 2.5% in Porto Alegre (RS).
