Through the Consumer Indebtedness and Default Survey (Peic), data on indebtedness in Brazil is collected. Based on it, it is possible to monitor the rate of debt increase, number of debtors, as well as their characteristics, etc. Incidentally, the data is calculated since January 2010, when Peic started its activities. Even in the year 2022, when collecting the data, it was possible to see impressive results.
The increase in debt
The alarming number of 2022 brought concerns. With 77.9% of Brazilian families indebted, mostly low-income, a new record was established. To get an idea, from 2021 to 2022, there was an increase of 7 percentage points. But there is an explanation for the increase in this index. According to José Roberto Tadros, president of the National Confederation of Commerce (CNC), the pandemic was the major determinant for this situation. That is, with the exorbitant increase in inflation, the growth of unemployment and the
lockdown affecting business, the rise in the debt ratio (in the lower classes) was inevitable. On the other hand, the decay of demand due to lack of resources (which translates as repressed consumption) was the main reason for the indebtedness of the upper classes. The most indebted profile
Finally, Peic, according to the data collected, concluded that the profile of the indebted Brazilian belongs to the female gender. Therefore, her characteristics are: a young woman (up to 35 years old) with incomplete secondary education, residing in the South or Southeast regions, from a family with an income of up to ten minimum wages.
