What is a Parallelogram?

The parallelogram is a flat figure that has four sides. It is part of the studies of plane geometry being a quadrilateral whose opposite sides are parallel.

In other words, parallelograms are polygons of four congruent opposite sides (which have the same measurement), for example, the square, the diamond and the rectangle.

Parallelogram Area

To find the parallelogram area, just calculate the product of the base measure and the height, expressed by the formula:

A = b.h

Where,

THE: area
B: base
H: height

Parallelogram Perimeter

The perimeter of the parallelogram, that is, the sum of all sides of the figure is calculated by the expression:

P = 2(a+b)

Where,

P: perimeter
The and B: two-sided lengths

Parallelogram Diagonals

The parallelograms have four sides and therefore, two diagonals. Note that their diagonals intersect at their respective midpoints.

Parallelogram Angles

The parallelogram has four vertices, with four inner and four outer angles, with the opposite angles having the same measure. The sum of the internal or external angles is 360°.

Parallelogram Properties

The properties of a parallelogram summarize all its characteristics mentioned above, namely:

On the sides:

Opposite sides of a parallelogram are congruent, that is, they have the same measurement.

About the Diagonals:

  • The diagonals of the parallelogram intersect at their respective midpoints (middle of the figure).
  • The diagonals of the parallelogram divide the figure into two congruent triangles.
  • If it's a rectangle, the diagonals are congruent.

About the Angles:

  • The opposite angles of the parallelogram are congruent (same measure).
  • The consecutive angles of the parallelogram are supplementary, the sum of which totals 180°.
  • The sum of the internal or external angles adds up to 360°.

Solved Exercises

1. Find the parallelogram area of base 10 cm and height 5 cm.

Remember that to find the area, just multiply the base measurement by the height:

A = b.h
A = 10.5
H = 50 cm2

2. What is the perimeter of a parallelogram with sides 4 cm and 5 cm?

To calculate the perimeter we use the following formula:

P = 2(a+b)
P = 2(4+5)
P = 2.9
P = 18 cm
