Definition of Poltergeist (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Poltergeist is considered a supernatural phenomenon, characterized by physical manifestations practiced by supposed spirits and ghosts.

Etymologically, poltergeist is a term of German origin, formed from the joining of the words polter, which means “noise”, “mess” or “disorder”; and geist, which means “spirit” or “ghost”.

The phenomenon of poltergeis is studied by parapsychology, a pseudoscience that investigates paranormal or psychic histories and phenomena.

The characteristics of a poltergeist manifestation involve movements of inanimate objects, disappearance and appearance of objects, flashing lights, undetectable sounds, among other physical contact activities that are inexplicable by science.

Previously, it was believed that the poltergeist was about witchcraft or demonic manifestations, however, these ideas fell into disuse in the nineteenth century, becoming associated with the state of disturbance of supposed souls disembodied.

Currently, for part of parapsychologists, the poltergeist or

Recurrent Spontaneous Psychokinesis, as it is also known, is a phenomenon awakened and motivated by living people, endowed with possible psychic powers. These people usually have emotional trauma and are unaware of their psychogenetic condition. THE telekinesis - ability to move objects with the power of thought - would be one of the psychic abilities that these individuals would have.

Poltergeist cases around the world gained notoriety in the early 1980s with the launch of "Poltergeist - The Phenomenon" film series, written and produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Tobe Hooper.

Poltergeist and Haunting

According to parapsychology, there is a big difference between the phenomenon of the poltergeist and the hauntings, even though they seem to have many things in common.

The big difference between a poltergeist and a haunt is its epicenter. In the first case, a person, usually an adolescent and female, is considered to be the “motivator” of the phenomenon, according to studies by parapsychologists.

Hauntings are usually associated with locations and can persist for years or centuries.
