Meaning of Gaia (What it is, Concept and Definition)

In Greek mythology, Gaia is the name of the Earth goddess, companion of Uranus (Sky) and mother of the Titans (giants). Gaia is the personification of planet Earth, represented as a gigantic and powerful woman.

In honor of the Greek goddess, the Gaia Theory (also known as the Gaia Hypothesis) was created by British scientist James E. Lovelock. In it, the scientist describes the planet Earth as a living organism, which has some characteristics such as the atmosphere with chemistry and the ability to maintain and change their environmental conditions - unlike other planets in the system solar.

Gaia Mission

The ESA (European Space Agency) mission called Gaia will allow, as of 2013, the construction of a catalog with the characteristics of billions of stars present in the Milky Way galaxy. Gaia is the name of the super-powerful digital camera, which contains 106 electronic sensors and a billion pixels, built to accurately map the Milky Way and other nearby galaxies.
