Jair Bolsonaro Government (2019-2022)


Born in Glicério, municipality of Sao Paulo, Jair Messias Bolsonaro was born on March 21, 1955. Son of Olinda Bonturi and Geraldo Bolsonaro, Jair was federal deputy for seven terms between 1991 and 2018, being elected by different parties throughout his career.

During Bolsonaro's 27 years in the Chamber of Deputies, he was known for his controversial personality and conservative political views.

Bolsonaro was elected president by the Social Liberal Party (PSL), to which he was affiliated until November 2019.

Three of his children are also in the world of politics: Carlos Bolsonaro (Rio de Janeiro councilor for the Social Party Cristiano – PSC), Flávio Bolsonaro (Rio deputy for the PSL) and Eduardo Bolsonaro (federal deputy for São Paulo, also by PSL).

Before entering politics, Bolsonaro graduated from the Agulhas Negras Military Academy in 1977 and served in the Brazilian Army's field artillery and parachute groups.

Jair Bolsonaro's presidential campaign

Jair Bolsonaro he was announced as a pre-candidate for the Presidency of Brazil in March 2016 by the PSC. However, it was only in January 2018 that he announced his affiliation with the PSL, the ninth party in his career since being elected councilor in 1988.

Launched in August 2018, Bolsonaro's presidential campaign had Hamilton Mourão as vice-president on the ticket. He presented himself as a candidate defending conservative values ​​and stricter policies in the area of ​​public safety.

On September 6, 2018, Bolsonaro was attacked during his campaign in Juiz de Fora, when he was stabbed in the abdomen. The candidate had to undergo four surgeries and spent a few weeks in recovery.

On October 7, 2018, Bolsonaro took first place in the first round of presidential elections with 46.03% of the vote.

Candidate Fernando Haddad, from the Workers' Party (PT), was in second place with 29.28%.

Bolsonaro was elected 38th President of the Republic of Brazil on October 28, when he won the second round with 55.13% of the valid votes, against Fernando Haddad's 44.87%.

Presidency of the Republic

Jair Bolsonaro and Hamilton Mourão took office as president and vice president of the Republic on January 1, 2019, in a ceremony at the National Congress. He received the presidential sash from the former president Michel Temer and gave a speech in the parlor of the Palácio do Planalto.

Bolsonaro's inauguration had the biggest security boost in the history of the inauguration. In all, about 6,000 agents and 2,600 military police were present.

After political differences with Luciano Bivar, president of the PSL, Bolsonaro left the party on November 19, 2019. This was the first time in history, since the country's redemocratization, that a president was without a party legend during his term.

Bolsonaro appointed Paulo Guedes as Minister of Economy, following his more liberal stance. In an interview, the president stated that the “free market is the mother of freedom”.

The president and his economic portfolio have a privatization agenda for state-owned companies.

In May 2018, Bolsonaro defended the flexibilization of labor rights. As early as 2020, the president and his team instituted emergency aid and a series of benefits to mitigate the effects caused by the crisis of the new coronavirus.

Environment in the Bolsonaro government

In the period of government transition, Bolsonaro even thought about extinguishing the Ministry of the Environment, but he backed down from the decision.

However, the Department of Environmental Education of the Ministry of the Environment was incorporated by the Secretariat of Ecotourism, while the Brazilian Forest Service was transferred from the Ministry of the Environment to the Agriculture.

In April 2019, Times magazine named the president as one of the hundred most influential people that year. In short, the magazine pointed out that the Bolsonaro government it would represent the break in a sequence of corruption, but highlights that its controversial character could reverse Brazilian progress in relation to climate change.

Public safety in the Bolsonaro Government

During his electoral campaign, Jair Bolsonaro gave an imposing speech regarding the fight against crime.

One of his first acts upon taking office on January 1, 2019, was to unify two ministries: Justice and Public Security. In addition, he chose Sergio Moro to lead the superministry.

In 2019, Veja reported that the public safety segment had 57% support, that is, the area with the highest approval.

Moro outlined three pillars for his management: fighting organized crime, violent crime and corruption. In April 2020, the former judge announced that he would leave the Bolsonaro government.
