Balaclava is a cap that covers the entire head and neck, leaving only the eyes (and sometimes mouth) visible. This type of cap is popularly known as a ninja cap.
The word originates from the Russian language balaklava and the bonnet was named probably in reference to the city that bears the same name. The city of Balaklava is located between Russia and Ukraine, in the Crimea region.
It was in this region that a conflict called the Battle of Balaklava took place, during the Crimean War, between 1853 and 1856. During this battle, the first record of the use of balaclava by soldiers fighting in war took place.
In addition to being used by soldiers fighting in colder regions, balaclavas also became popular among sports enthusiasts.
Use of balaclava in sports
Nowadays, balaclava is also used by practitioners of cycling, motorcycling, fencing, motor racing, paintball and airsoft, for example.
In addition to protecting against the effects of the cold, balaclava can also protect the face from sweating and from bumps or other accidents that may happen during sports.
Depending on the sport played, the balaclava can be made of different materials, such as wool, mesh or neoprene. They can also have thermal insulation, protection from wind, sunlight and even fire.
Use of balaclava by police and firefighters
Some police allow the use of balaclava by their agents, but this varies according to the decision of each corporation. In general, the use of the cap by police officers is also intended for specific situations such as special operations.
Firefighters can use a balaclava with special fire protection, called a flame arrester.
Is the balaclava an EPI?
Depending on the use, the balaclava can be a PPE, which is Personal Protective Equipment determined by the rules of the Ministry of Labor and Employment.
In addition to firefighters, other professionals with hazardous activities, such as electricians and divers, can use a balaclava that is adequate to protect against the risks of their work.
