The structure of the Brazilian population has already undergone several changes. There were moments in history when we had accelerated natural growth, with a greater number of young people than the elderly. At other times, we had a drop in natural growth, and from then on the population fluctuated a lot in terms of age structure.
From 1970 onwards, birth rates gradually decreased as a result of the entry of women into the world. professional, who no longer have time to take care of children and consider the high costs generated for the education of kids.
With the decrease in birth rates, the population is gradually aging. According to estimates prepared and released by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), the number of elderly people is expected to increase. By the year 2050, there will be, in Brazil, 73 elderly people for every 100 children. The study also disclosed that in the year 2050 the Brazilian population will be approximately 215 million inhabitants.
A global trend, which also serves Brazil, is the so-called “zero growth”. According to estimates, around 2039, the Brazilian population should stabilize its growth. This means that the country's population will stop growing, causing the absolute population to fall.
Another factor that allows the aging of the population is the increase in life expectancy among Brazilians, currently 72.78 years old. This average will not stabilize, as in 2050, life expectancy will rise to 81.29 years, equaling that of countries with a high HDI, such as Iceland (81.80 years) and Japan (82.60).
