Meaning of Azimuth (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Azimuth is horizontal direction measure, defined in degrees. Azimuth means path in Arabic, and is widely used in astronomy, topography, engineering, etc. In azimuth, the direction corresponds to north, and increases according to the right side of the clock.

There are three types of azimuth, the magnetic azimuth, which is indicated by the compass, widely used in navigation and astronomy, which is one of the horizontal coordinates, the geographic azimuth which is measured towards the North Pole, and the cartographic azimuth, which is measured from the direction of the vertical lines on the chart. In engineering, azimuth is widely used in topography, to measure distances, points etc.

Azimuth measurements can range from 0° to 360° and measurements are made in quadrants, clockwise. There are four quadrants, each with a different measurement.

How to calculate Azimuth

1. Separate the xA and yA coordinates from point A
2. Separate the coordinates xB and yB from point B.
3. Make C=xB-xA
4. Make D=yB-yA

5. When you divide C by D you have the Course from A to B.
6. If C>0 and D>0, the Azimuth from A to B is equal to the Heading;
7. If C>0 and Y<0, Azimuth is 180 degrees minus Heading.
