The Seven Wonders of the Modern World

On July 7, 2007, at the Estádio da Luz, in Lisbon, the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, a new set of works worthy of listing, as was done by the Greeks with the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The objective is to keep alive in the memory the beauty and grandeur of works built by man and that deserve to be seen. There is still a tourist interest to create this new list, encouraging visits to these places. Below, let's see the candidates that were chosen as the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

Also known as the Flavian Amphitheater, the Coliseum is the main symbol of Rome, Italy. Stage for fights between gladiators and massacres of Christians, today it retains only part of its structure. Built in 70d. a., is one of the greatest constructions of the Roman Empire.

Chichén Itzá (Mexico)

The Mayan City of Chichén Itzá is located in the Mexican province of Yucatán. The structures of the city include the pyramid of Kukulkan, the Temple of Chac Mool, the Praça das Thousands Columns and the Prisoners' Game Field, forming a beautiful archaeological site of this civilization American.

Machu Picchu (Peru)

Built in the 15th century, Machu Picchu(in Quechua, Machu Picchu means “old mountain”) is also known as “lost city of the Incas“. Located on top of a mountain in the Andes, at 2400 meters of altitude, in the valley of the Urubamba river, today Peru, the city today is the main symbol of the Inca Empire, which was destroyed with the arrival of the Spaniards in the region in the century XVI.

Christ the Redeemer (Brazil)

Located in Rio de Janeiro, Christ the Redeemer measures 38 meters and was built on the Corcovado hill. It is the greatest symbol of the city of Rio de Janeiro and also a symbol of Brazilian Christianity, being inaugurated on October 12, 1931.

Great Wall of China (China)

The Great Wall of China, or the Great Wall, began construction around 220 BC. Ç. by determination of the first Chinese Emperor Qin Shihuang, of the Qin dynasty, with the objective of military protection in the north of the Chinese Empire, extending for about three thousand kilometers.

Petra is an important archaeological enclave in Jordan, in the Middle East. Its occupation dates back to 1200 BC. Ç. The city prospered during the Roman and Byzantine Empires, but two earthquakes devastated it, the second being in 551 AD. Ç.

Taj Mahal (India)

The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum located in Agra, a small town in India, and built between 1630 and 1652. Made of white marble by order of Emperor Shah Jahan, in memory of his wife, Aryumand Banu Begam, the Taj Mahal is also known as one of the greatest proofs of love in the world, containing inscriptions taken from the quran and inlaid with stones semi-precious.
