The history of the emergence of margarine is related to the winning of the Hippólyte de Mége Mouriés prize, in 1869. This prize, proposed by Napoleon's government for anyone who discovered a product similar to butter, but one that was easily preserved and had more reasonable prices. At that time France was going through a serious economic crisis and needed several genres foodstuffs, as butter became an increasingly expensive and scarce product, it did not provide for the little classes. favored.
Mége performed several experiments and managed to produce a new fat that would be the basis of margarine.
