Teacher's Day Story
In Brazil, the creation of Teacher's Day is associated with the Federal Decree of October 15, 1827, signed by D. Peter I.
In that document, it was established that all cities in the country would build primary schools for elementary education. At the time, they were called “Schools of First Letters”.
However, the celebration began only 120 years later. It was, therefore, in 1947 that the “Pro-officialization Committee for Teacher's Day” was formed, transforming the project into State Law No. 174.
The first celebration took place in the city of São Paulo. It was headed by the educator Solomon Becker who became known for his famous phrases: “Teacher is a profession, an educator is a vocation”; "In Education, not moving forward is going backwards."
Thus, in the following years, schools in the capital of São Paulo adopted the idea that this day should be dedicated to education professionals.
Despite this, Teacher's Day in Brazil was only made official and declared a school holiday by the Federal Decree No. 52,682 of October 14, 1963, signed by the President of the Republic João Goulart.
