The phenomenon occurs when the waters of the Pacific, close to the Equator, experience above-normal warming for a period of six months. As a result, the rainfall pattern, wind circulation and temperatures are directly affected. In Brazil, El Niño acts in the North region causing moderate to intense droughts, reaching the Northeast with droughts of different intensities.

In the Southeast, the phenomenon increases recorded temperatures, especially in summer and winter. In the Central-West and South, El Niño is responsible for above-average rainfall, in addition to increasing heat in the Central-West.

Storms predicted for December

As announced by the Inmet bulletin, the end of November and the beginning of December will be marked by storms resulting from the phenomenon in the South, Southeast and part of the Central-West. In other areas of the country, the drought is expected to remain.

“Considering the precipitation anomaly forecast for the period of 1 month (November 15 to December 14, 2023), there is an indication of wetter conditions than normal in parts of northern Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, central-south of Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo, southern Minas Gerais and in part of northern Pará and Amapá”, stated the Inmet.

“For the other regions of the country, the forecast indicates the predominance of drier conditions than normal, with emphasis on for the Amazon region, mainly in the most central and southern sector of the region”, informs another part of the bulletin disclosed.

In addition to changes in rainfall, the document analyzes the temperature of the Equatorial Pacific Ocean, with the average temperature analyzed at 3 °C above normal. As a result, heavy clouds appear that cause intense rain in the aforementioned areas.
