O Google announced that from December 1st this year it will exclude the inactive accounts registered in your system. In other words, accounts that have not been accessed by their owners within a period of two years will be deleted. As a result, Google accounts that are deleted will lose all their stored content, such as emails, photos in Google Photos, documents in Google Docs, files stored in Google Drive and Schedule.

The measure will be applied to personal accounts, being invalid for registrations on the Google platform for companies, schools and other organizations. According to the announcement released by Google, the deletion of accounts will begin with those that were created and were never used again.

The company announced that it will delete inactive accounts because they have a greater chance of having their security compromised. This is because registrations may have passwords that have been leaked and, in general, do not have two-factor authentication. “Our internal analysis shows that abandoned accounts are at least 10 times less likely than active accounts to set up two-step verification,” Google explained.

How do I prevent my account from being deleted?

If you haven't used Gmail, but have used another Google service like Drive or Meet in the last two years, your account won't be deleted. If you have not used any of Google's services and want to prevent your account from being deleted due to inactivity, you will need to log in and complete at least one of these activities:

  • Use Google Search;
  • Use Google Drive;
  • Read or send an email;
  • Watch or upload a video on YouTube;
  • Download an application;
  • Use the “Sign in with Google” feature in a third-party application.

Finally, accounts that are configured with a subscription, whether from a Google service or a third-party, will also not be deleted. The same goes for accounts that have a video registered on YouTube.
