The study reveals worrying levels of lead and cadmium in cocoa, both being heavy metals and toxic to health.
These metals are associated with the development of serious illnesses, such as lung problems, cancer and even early death.
Among the brands evaluated, including Hershey’s, Wallmart, Nestlé and Ghirardelli, details of lead or cadmium were found in 16 analyzed products.
The levels found exceed the limits considered safe by the state of California, which are 0.5 micrograms per day for lead and 4.1 micrograms per day for cadmium.
The research also revealed that dark chocolates have higher concentrations of heavy metals compared to milk chocolates.
