Researchers from the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI) found a skeleton whose burial method suggests that the person was buried according to traditions indigenous people.

The study is ongoing for the second year in a row, indicating that researchers are conducting detailed excavations and analyzes of the area archaeological over an extended period.
In addition to UFPI, the research involves professors and students from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and the Federal University of Vale do São Francisco (UNIVASF).
Teachers explain the finding
Such interinstitutional collaboration was promoted to investigate and better understand the history and culture of the region, as well as the lives of the populations that lived there in the past.
According to professor Claudia Cunha, who coordinates the Osteoarchaeology Laboratory at UFPI, the skeleton exhumed this year belongs to an adult male.
Furthermore, the bioarchaeologist reports that he was wearing a necklace and two bracelets made of polished bone beads, which were still in place and had traces of threads.
During the excavations, the researchers also identified several objects related to material culture in the same place.

Among these findings, a group associated with the production of fibers and/or fabrics from native cotton stands out, which makes it possible, for the first time, to reconstruct part of the manufacturing process of these materials, including the collection, spinning and weaving.
Professor Claudia highlights that both the second skeleton, recently discovered, and the first, found in 2022, represent valuable sources of information.
She emphasizes that such skeletons not only provide us with knowledge about what these people were like in life, but also generate important insights into the dynamics of social relations in the communities of origin of these individuals.
On the other hand, Professor Grégoire van Havre, who leads the project, stated that recent discoveries archaeological findings provide evidence of great relevance about the society that resided in the southern region of Piauí.
He noted that these fossils suggest the presence of an indigenous population proficient in weaving technology.
This not only indicates the presence of isolated groups in seasonal migration, but also points to the existence of a society complex established in the south of Piauí.
