Unlike many teachers, teacher María Domínguez faces a daily challenge to get to the rural school where she teaches, located in the interior of the Uruguay.
Each morning, on the banks of highway No. 56, she puts on her white coat to be recognized as a teacher and holds out her hand, waiting for a generous driver to take her to work.

The ritual takes place on a freezing winter morning in the small town of Florida, located 90 km north of the capital, Montevideo. The 29-year-old professional is looking for a ride to fulfill his teaching duties.
María's adversity is even more complicated when one considers the destination of her journey. She must arrive at the rural school in Paso de la Cruz del Yí before 10 am.
The institution is located 108 km from his home, in the middle of a remote region. His commitment is to teach just two students, Juliana, aged 4, and Benjamín, aged 9, the only students at the small rural school.
These children are the children of families who live in the area and are involved in local agriculture, according to the heroic teacher's account.

Teacher faces the road daily
The lack of her own vehicle is a significant obstacle for María. But even if she had a car, it would be difficult to afford the fuel costs for such a long trip every day.
She owns a motorcycle, but finds it impossible to complete the entire journey with this vehicle. María explains that the distance is too long, and her bike would not be able to withstand the repetitive journey of more than 100 km to go and another 100 km to return.
Furthermore, road conditions are not ideal, with a considerable flow of heavy vehicles, making motorcycle travel dangerous.
The situation worsens when the use of public transport is considered. To use this means of transport, she would need to take two buses and still face several setbacks.
The first bus leaves Florida at 6:15 am, while the second, according to the timetable, should arrive at the boarding point at 9 am.
However, due to the roadworks, with luck, the second bus would pass around 9:30 am, which would make her late to school.
According to the teacher, public transport to return home is scarce, with only one bus line that passes along the highway close to the school just after sunset. For the second journey of the day, she would have to wait until the next day for public transport.
How much, after all, does the devotion of teaching cost? And perhaps the question is valid and important: how much does it cost to invest in the future of students? For this teacher, cost hours of travel per day, far from your comfort.
