Study on HPV in men
A detailed analysis of genital HPV infection in the male population was carried out by an international group of researchers with studies published between 1995 and 2022.
The results revealed that, globally, around a third of men over the age of 15 are infected with some type of genital HPV.
Furthermore, approximately one in five carries one or more viral species considered high risk, with the potential to cause cancer.
The most common genotypes included HPV-16, with a prevalence of 5%, and HPV-6, with 4%. Such data highlight the importance of understanding and monitoring HPV infection in men as a significant public health challenge.
Protection against HPV
HPV infection can be prevented in two main ways: using condoms during sexual intercourse and vaccination.
Vaccination against HPV is now part of the immunization routine and is available free of charge for boys and girls aged between 9 and 14 years, and is administered in two doses.
Adults with special conditions, such as HIV carriers, transplant recipients and people undergoing treatment cancer with radiotherapy or chemotherapy, can also receive the vaccine through the Unified Health System (SUS).
