13The King's New Clothes, by Hans Christian Andersen
He was once a king who cared a lot about appearances. He spent a lot of money on new and expensive clothes. And he liked to wear them and show them off to his people. To tell the truth, this king barely reigned, because he only thought about his clothes and when to wear them.
News of the king's passion for new clothes reached other places. Thus, once, two dishonest adventurers appeared in the kingdom. They presented themselves as weavers and claimed to have the most beautiful fabric in the world. More than that, supposed weavers claimed that clothes made from such fabric were invisible to anyone who was foolish..
Upon learning the news, the king immediately wanted to order a garment with such interesting fabric. That way, he thought, he could know who was smart and who was stupid, so he could better choose who worked for him. The would-be weavers then earned a fortune to make the king's new clothes.
On one occasion, the king sent one of his ministers to see if the swindlers were doing a good job. Upon entering the room where they were sewing the clothes, he saw nothing. But, in order not to appear foolish, he pretended to see the garment, which, according to the two men, was of beautiful colors.
Faced with the minister's reaction, they asked for more money to finish the clothes. After all, the king was going to wear it in a procession that was to take place very soon. When the garment was ready, the weavers took it to the king. The monarch saw nothing either. But, not to sound silly, he said it looked amazing!
So his majesty took off the clothes he was wearing, and soon after, the scoundrels helped him put on his new clothes. Everyone in the palace praised the king's new clothes, as no one wanted to look foolish.. The same happened when the king walked naked during the procession. Only one child shouted from the crowd:
- Just look! The king is without clothes!
From then on, that truth spread among those present, and everyone started to point to the king, while saying:
"The king is without clothes!"
However, the king continued on his way, with his head held high. He'd rather believe the folly of his people than admit that he really was without clothes.
