4. Nutella: history marked by necessity
The origin of Nutella is directly linked to historical moments of scarcity and need.
In the 19th century, Napoleon tried to block British trade, this resulted in a shortage of chocolate and consequently high prices.
To optimize the use of the product, Italian confectioners began to add chopped hazelnuts, creating the basis of what would become Nutella.
Years later, during World War II, the shortage of chocolate led to the creation of Pasta Gianduia, a precursor to the Nutella we know today.
5. Name origin
The inspiration for the name “Gianduia” — a precursor to Nutella — has theatrical roots in the Italian Commedia Dell’Arte.
Gianduia, a smiling character, was known to carry a “duja”, a pot in Piedmontese dialect.
