If you've been looking for movie tickets recently, you've probably noticed two things: Barbie is dominating theaters all over Brazil and “Oppenheimer” is available in Imax sessions. But do you know what this technology is and what are its differentials?

The use of the Imax format has been increasingly defended by big names in cinema, mainly Christopher Nolan, director of Oppenheimer. However, this technology has existed since 1970, but it took a few decades to reach Brazil.

Prologue: What is Imax?

In a very simple and direct way, it is a technology created to provide more immersion and quality in film screenings and other audiovisual projects. But for this, the cinema hall must be appropriate.

The rooms need to be much larger (355 square meters against the 80 square meters of conventional rooms). In addition, the screen must also be larger, at 16.1 meters high and 22 meters wide, and needs to be a little more rounded.

And, of course, for films to be able to be shown in Imax theaters, they must be shot with suitable equipment. Generally, 70 mm films are used, not 35 mm, which are the most common.

The result is a more immersive and much better experience.

Act 1: the creation

Imax appeared in 1970, created by a Canadian company of the same name. The first exhibition using this technology took place in Japan at Expo '70. However, the first movie theater dedicated to this format was only launched the following year, in Toronto. The film shown was “North Of Superior”.

In Brazil, the technology only arrived in 1997 and the first movie theater for the format only came in 2009, in São Paulo. Today, almost every capital in the country already has one.

Act 2: The Good and the Bad

a room of movie theater Imax, as said before, is a little different from the others. In addition to the differences in size and screen, the projection technology is quite different. Starting with the resolution, which is 10,000 by 7,000 pixels – the common one is 2,048 by 1,080.

In addition, the chairs are arranged in an angular format, with slanted walls, so that viewers can see all the details of the screen. In addition, the sound of the Imax exhibitions is more powerful, and the projection is made with a laser light system, using two projectors.

For all this, filming and broadcasting in Imax is much more expensive. Thus, the prices of these sessions end up being more salty.
