A literacy it is the learning process that allows a person to acquire basic skills in reading, writing and interpreting texts. These skills are fundamental for full participation in society and for personal and professional development.
However, according to the survey Education from the Perspective of Students and Their Families, commissioned from Datafolha by Fundação Lemann, Itaú Social and Banco Interamericano de Development (BID), with support from the Social Knowledge Network, four out of ten parents or guardians consider that the advance in literacy after the pandemic evolved more slowly than that was expected.

School-aged children and young people are moving forward with difficulties
According to those responsible, 10% of literacy students are at a level far below expectations in reading and writing and 11% are at an inadequate level. This survey was carried out in December 2022 and heard 1,323 guardians of 1,863 students enrolled in public schools, between 6 and 18 years old.
The objective was to evaluate the first year of in-person return to school after the covid-19 pandemic.
Other data were collected by the survey and it also revealed that eight out of ten respondents (78%) consider that education should be the priority of the new governments, followed by health (66%) and security public (21%).
Thus, for education to be prioritized, respondents suggested that the new governments should provide a greater supply of teacher training, expand the use of technologies in schools and promote reinforcement and recovery programs for students.
Great regional inequality
In this research, it was identified that students from the North Region need the use of technologies much higher (28%) than among students from the South and Southeast regions of the country (18%).
In addition, the interviews revealed that there are income inequalities: in schools with lower socioeconomic status, the number of students with problems in the literacy process reaches 50%, and 14% of them would not be advancing in the process and 36% are advancing, however, with difficulties.
“The resumption of face-to-face classes in educational networks was a milestone in the lives of school-age children and young people, after the most critical period of the pandemic. Now it is necessary to keep a close eye and propose agile and efficient actions to mitigate the high dropout rate school, learning delays and challenges related to mental health that affect our students. It is also important that this be done throughout the national territory, with jointly structured actions, guaranteeing equity and quality, basic requirements for the realization of the right to education", said Patricia Mota Guedes, superintendent of Itaú Social, through of note.
