  1. The dominant phase is the gametophyte which is larger and free-living.
  2. Vascularization allowed these individuals to reach larger sizes.
  3. The reproductive cycle of ferns is of the haplodiplobiontic type, the spores are produced by meiosis inside the ferns. sporangia and carried by the wind to the moist substrate, where it attaches and forms the gametophyte, which is independent and called prothallus. The prothallus is very small and ends up in contact with the water, allowing fertilization through the flagellated antherozoids that swim to the oosphere, giving rise to the sporophyte which is the dominant phase of the cycle. In bryophytes, individuals have separate sexes and the antherozoid reaches the oosphere also through water and then fertilization occurs forming a diploid sporophyte that has a stem with a capsule at the tip and is the transient phase of the cycle. Haploid spores are produced in this capsule, then released and carried by the wind, germinating away from the mother plant. Germination leads to the formation of a new gametophyte which is the enduring part of the cycle.
  4. Plants with flowers, fruits and double fertilization.
  5. It is the cycle in which the alternation of generations occurs. The sporophyte is the diploid stage of the plant, where it produces spores by meiosis. The gametophyte is a haploid individual that produces gametes.
  6. Bryophytes are dependent on water for fertilization.
  7. Double fertilization is an important characteristic of angiosperms. After the pollen is deposited on the receptive stigma, it germinates and produces the pollen tube that will grow towards the ovary. Still inside the pollen tube, the generative cell divides giving rise to two sperm nuclei (male gametes) that are released and one fertilizes the oosphere (female gamete) generating a diploid zygote and the other unites with two polar nuclei and originates a triploid tissue called endosperm.
  8. Seeds are the development of mature and fertilized ovules of gymnosperms and angiosperms. The fruits are the development of the ovaries after the fertilization of the angiosperms.
  9. In addition to protecting the seed, the fruits attract dispersers that, when they feed on them, carry the seeds away, promoting the conquest of new environments.
  10. Flowers have four whorls: the calyx (sepals), the corolla (petals), the androecium (stamens), and the gynoecium (carpels).
