On the 4th of July 2017, Kayla Unbehaun, an American girl, went to visit her mother, who only had the right to receive her daughter. Kayla's father, who had custody of the girl, the next day, went to the child's mother's house to pick up his daughter. However, arriving in Illinois, both mother and daughter were missing. Immediately a search was started for Kayla to be found, but, after many years, the clues of the kidnapping faded away.
This does not mean that the child's story fell into oblivion, quite the contrary, this case was featured in a Netflix series, known as Unsolved Mysteries.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children created a possible image of what Kayla would look like today, aged 15. With that, 6 years after the kidnapping, in North Carolina, her mother and Kayla were seen, causing the authorities to reach them.
Who helped identify Kayla and her mother was a store owner in Asheville, who recognized Kayla from the Netflix series, already aged 15, calling the authorities immediately.
Once the police arrived, her mother was taken away and Kayla was found.

After being arrested, Heather Unbehaun was arrested, and is on bail of 250 thousand dollars, awaiting extradition. Kayla remains in protective custody.
Kayla's father says he is very happy to see that his daughter is safe in their home.
He first thanked the South Elgin City Police Department and also the National Children's Center Missing and Exploited, which created a possible image of how Kayla would currently look, making her possible to be recognized.
There were many pages that were moved on social networks that made Kayla's story remain alive, which was essential for the cause to be publicized.
In this new beginning of the story, Kayla's father says that he will keep a little more privacy with his daughter until everything returns to normal. Meanwhile, Heather Unbehaun was charged with child abduction.
