28 drivers are fined per hour for using cell phones in Brazil, the use of the device is the third leading cause of death in traffic in Brazilian territory. With that in mind, Senator Maria do Carmo Alves (PP-SE) presented Bill 2699/2022. The project consists of increasing the proposed value of the fine for those caught using cell phones while driving. After all, cell phone use is second only to speeding and alcohol use while driving among the biggest causes of accidents.

According to the CTB- Brazilian Traffic Code, for driving any vehicle, the driver must be completely attentive, thus valuing the physical integrity of himself and others.

Remembering that handling the cell phone is prohibited even if the vehicle is stopped in traffic lights or congestion. Handling a cell phone while driving is not considered a crime, but it is an extremely serious administrative offense.

Although every hour 28 drivers are caught neglecting the importance of attention during traffic, which totals around 675 Brazilians who risk their lives every day using the cell phone on the steering wheel, the number is probably much higher, after all, many use these devices and are not caught.

The risks of using your cell phone while driving

The risk of the driver being involved in some type of accident for sending or reading text messages while driving is 400%. Manufactures of accessories that fix the cell phone on the car dashboard can contribute to the increase in these traffic accidents.

Senator Maria do Carmo Alves declared: “Cell phone use is already the third leading cause of death in traffic. I believe that the aggravation of the penalty tends to reduce the use of cell phones while driving and, consequently, the number of accidents on Brazilian streets and roads”.
