Money forgotten in banks could generate a “multiplier effect”

The impact should be small on the economy, in terms of rescuing forgotten values, according to economics professor at UFPR (Federal University of Paraná) João Guilherme Vieira Silva Viera.

It is estimated that there is R$ 4 billion to be returned to approximately 29 million people and companies, as informed by the Central Bank. The total value reaches the mark of R$ 8 billion and to consult these values it is necessary to access the website valorareceber.bcb.gov.br.

Considering the ''irrisory'' value, the professor takes into account the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of Brazil. In 2020, it closed at BRL 7.5 trillion. The GDP is the sum of everything that has been produced and involves the production of goods, as well as the provision of remunerated services.

The ''multiplier effect'' is also considered, as it measures the effects that the release of these values can generate “A person activates several other sectors when he makes an expense, he activates a chain of supplies. There are studies that calculate that every BRL 1 spent on Bolsa Familia generates BRL 1.78 of impact on the economy.

However, there is a counterpoint, the effects generated through these resources in the economic context are greater, when the values are used in consumption, usually of primary need. The professor emphasizes that if this money is used to reduce debts or make investments, it will have a smaller multiplier effect.

“If people decide, for example, to use the money to pay debts, the impact on the economy is smaller. When you make the impact for spending, if you channel the real you earn to spending, it has a greater impact on the economy than using it to pay off debt or to save. It all depends, the true value (of the impact on the economy) is unknown. We don't know what people are going to do with that money.

The scenario of economic retraction can also influence consumers to have a more restrained behavior when spending this money.

The economic downturn can have effects on consumer behavior, leading them to adopt more serene practices when spending that money. “I think a lot of people will use that money to reduce debt. But it's my guess. People don't like to get into debt, afraid of losing credit. If there is money there, it will do something”, understands the professor. “Just the fact that part of it will be used to pay debt already shows that it won't have a very significant impact on the economy. Why does it happen? When you pay off a debt, whoever receives it, whether bank or creditor, has to decide whether to reinvest or lend that money. And that's it, in a crisis situation it usually doesn't happen. People usually save during the crisis, not to mention that part of the people who will receive this money and who do not they will pay to divide or consume, they will certainly save money due to the increases in the risk of the economy”, he said. viera

However, the teacher understands that these values come at a good time, since there are a series of expenses, including taxes, at the beginning of the year.

How do I know if I have receivables?

To find out if you have any forgotten value, it is necessary to consult the Central Bank system, see below the step by step:

  • Go to the website valorareceber.bcb.gov.br;
  • Enter your CPF or CNPJ and the date of birth or creation of the company to check if you have forgotten values in banks;
  • If so, remember the date that the system will inform you. It is on this day that you will know the exact amount you have to receive and request the transfer, also by valuesareceber.bcb.gov.br.

When will I know the amount to be redeemed?

A calendar was created by the system in order for individuals or legal entities to be able to request redemption and find out the exact amounts forgotten. And for that, three periods were conceived for this purpose:

  • 7 to 11/3 – for companies born or companies opened before 1968;
  • 3/14 to 18 – for companies born or companies opened between 1968 and 1983;
  • March 21 to 25 – for companies born or companies opened after 1983.
