This term, “city of 15 minutes”, was created in 2016 by Carlos Moreno, associate professor at the Sorbonne University Business School, in Paris, France. He says that the main objective is to offer inhabitants access to essential services with little travel time.
The main idea is that residents can walk or cycle to work, the doctor, supermarkets and much more. And the most interesting thing is that in this way it is possible to carry out these activities in a quarter of an hour.
After all, why did this development begin?
Moreno says that due to urban sprawl, people started to normalize the long journeys to travel in big cities. The main aim is to maintain the concept of 15-minute cities in different population densities.
Are there cities that have already adopted this concept?
Research reveals that Paris has already adhered to this system since 2020 and a group of cities in the United Kingdom will start testing next year. In Canada, there are also expectations that the city will follow through.
However, there are people who disagree with this concept as they believe it will increase isolation, while others think that citizens will be monitored by surveillance.
Despite all this controversy, the mayor of Edmonton, Canada, clarified saying that the intention is just create more walkable neighborhoods and that people don't have difficulties to have access to places.
After false information was published, a group of college students gathered to protest the 15 minutes idea. They said they would be required to stay 90% within these areas and that they would be monitored for their carbon footprint.
However, the Edmonton government claims that they only want to support the development and growth of the city, making it more prosperous, healthy and resilient to the climate.
