Originally from Africa, it has its scientific name of sansevieria trifasciata and there can be 3 types, but what differs are their leaves.

Despite having different types, they all have the same purpose, which is protection, thus being widely used in sympathy and rituals in religions of African matrices.

In Catholicism, the Sword of Saint George was named after the holy warrior Saint George of Cappadocia, honoring the warrior's sword. In order not to isolate the fact that the plant has African origins and is of great importance for religions of African matrices, it was called the Sword of Ogum.

The Sword of São Jorge may be famous as the Sword of Santa Bárbara or the Sword of Iansã, but the difference lies in the colors of its leaves, which are yellow. Its properties are capable of absorbing toxic substances during the day, and releasing clean oxygen at night.

How to grow Sword of Saint George

  • There are two ways to make the Espada seedling to carry out the planting, and one of them is to separate a clump, which is the part that is directly in the ground.
  • In this clump there must be at least one leaf and a piece of rhizome, which is a stem that serves to absorb nutritive materials.
  • The second way is to cut a piece of the plant's leaf into pieces of up to 10cm and bury it in moist soil.
  • After this process, the plant will begin to take root.
  • The plant needs good sunlight, but it doesn't have to be direct light, it can burn the leaves.
