Change in ID number
The new reference number for the identity card will be that of the Individual Taxpayer Registration (CPF), that is, the RG number will no longer exist. According to the federal government, the measure aims to increase security and make life easier for citizens.
In addition to this change in relation to the number, the look of the document will also undergo changes. However, there is no need to rush to issue the new RG, as the public security departments, which are responsible for issuing identity cards, will have until March 2023 to adapt to the new molds of the document.
In addition, the current model of the document will continue to be accepted until the 10-year period is completed for citizens up to 60 years of age. On the other hand, for those over 60, the document will not expire.
How this modification will affect the security of citizens
Currently, people get their Identity Card in a Federated Unit, with a number, but if lose and request the document in another state, for example, they have access to a new RG, with number different.
With this change in the system, a new document, issued in another state, will be registered as a duplicate, instead of being a new document, as is the case today. In this way, it will be possible to reduce the number of RG frauds, since, in practice, it is possible to have up to 27 RG numbers in Brazil today.
The new document is also seen as safer, thanks to the possibility of electronic validation of its authenticity through a QR Code, which can even be done offline.
